When you first purchase a new car, there is nothing like sliding into the driver’s seat and smelling that new car smell.  Everything is clean and new.  There is nothing like it.  Now, the hard part comes.  How are you going to keep your new car clean?


On the outside, you can take it through a car washing or get out the hose and a soft cloth in your own driveway.  The interior is a little trickier; no one likes climbing around their car with a vacuum in hand.  At the same time, you might end up spilling a beverage or bring in something on the bottom of your shoe that indelibly stains your new car’s interior.  One of the best ways to keep your new car looking clean is with rubber car floor mats.

These floors mats serve the purpose of protecting the permanent interior of your car, in this case the floor, from spills, stains, and dirt that would otherwise permeate it.  They are an extra layer of barrier protection.  Rubber mats do not allow anything to slip through them.  Even a cooler with a slow leak will just puddle on the top of the mat rather than soak into your interior.  If you use carpet based floor mats, you might find yourself the victim of seepage.

Rubber was originally used for its water repellent properties.  Hundreds of years ago it was collected from the sap of trees and used to coat fabrics to make waterproof mackintoshes and oilcloth for tables, shipping, and more.  Today, some natural rubber can still be found, but most rubber is created through chemical processes and vulcanized.  Vulcanized rubber will withstand the constant temperature changes that take place inside your car, especially on a hot summer’s day.  It will not be destroyed, but after many years of this kind of extreme exposure it will degrade.


Car floor mats are a great way to cheaply protect your car’s interior because you can easily replace them.  It is much more expensive to get comprehensive detailing done once a year.  Generally, the mats come with the purchase of your new car.  These mats will likely have the car company’s logo stamped on them.  You can use them for a few years and if they start to crack or tear from overuse, you can recycle them and purchase new ones.  You might go for a plain, solid color such as blue or black.  However, there are also novelty rubber mats that feature cartoon characters, wildlife, or other car culture logos.  If you want to decorate the interior or your car, but aren’t the type of person to hang dice off your rearview mirror, whimsical floor mats might be your answer.

Rubber mats are extremely easy to keep clean.  All you need to do is remove them from your car and either shake them out or hose them down and give them a few minutes to air dry.  While they’re drying you might want to vacuum around the area that they cover.  You’ll find that pebbles are especially prone of slipping under your mat.  This is especially the case of your mats simply lay on the floor of your vehicle.  However, there are some types of mats that connect to built-in hooks on your car’s floor.  These mats provide more comprehensive protection from dirt but are also harder to remove and replace.
